The kitchen island has changed the way people use their homes. In many of the apartments and houses we work on in Budapest, it is no longer just a preparation surface. It is where breakfast happens, where guests sit while dinner is being cooked, where the family gathers at the end of the day.

That shift in how the space is used changes everything about how it should be lit.

In our experience at HBellorin, lighting above the kitchen island is one of the decisions that has the most visible impact on the result. Get it wrong and the kitchen feels unresolved, regardless of how well everything else is designed. Get it right and the island becomes the visual and social anchor of the entire space.

Two pendants or three — how we decide

The number of pendant lights above a kitchen island depends primarily on the length of the surface, not on personal preference.

For islands up to 150 centimeters, two pendants are usually sufficient. They provide balanced illumination across the surface and maintain a clean, symmetrical composition. For longer islands, between 150 and 220 centimeters, three pendants create a more even distribution of light and a stronger visual rhythm along the length of the counter.

In the Zamardi project, a Mid-Century Modern renovation on Lake Balaton, we worked with a long kitchen island that ran parallel to a full-height window. Three pendants in a warm brass finish allowed us to maintain proportion with the ceiling height while keeping the light evenly distributed across the entire work surface. Anything fewer would have left the ends of the island visually unanchored.

The size of the fixture matters as much as the number

A common mistake we see in kitchen projects is choosing pendant size based on what looks good in isolation, without considering the proportions of the island and the ceiling height together.

As a general principle, the diameter of each pendant should be roughly one quarter to one third of the island's width. In a kitchen with a 90-centimeter wide island, pendants between 22 and 30 centimeters in diameter tend to read correctly. Larger fixtures in that same space start to feel heavy and can interfere with movement around the island.

Ceiling height also plays a role. In Budapest apartments, where ceiling heights vary significantly between buildings and eras, we adjust fixture scale accordingly. Higher ceilings can support pendants with more visual weight. Lower ceilings require lighter, more compact fixtures that do not reduce the sense of space.

Hanging height — the number most people get wrong

The bottom of the pendant should sit approximately 75 to 90 centimeters above the island surface. This range keeps the light close enough to illuminate the work area effectively while leaving the sightline across the kitchen open.

When pendants hang too high, they lose their ability to provide focused task lighting and start to read as decorative elements rather than functional ones. When they hang too low, they interrupt the visual flow of the space and can become physically inconvenient for taller users.

In the Csucshegy project, a three-floor house set into the hills of Budapest's third district, the kitchen had generous ceiling height and a central island that served as the primary social space of the ground floor. We positioned the pendants at 80 centimeters above the surface, which gave the island a clear sense of definition without competing with the open volumes of the room around it. With a larger format system like the FLOW L, this height becomes even more critical given the visual weight of the fixture at scale.

Material and finish — connecting the island to the rest of the kitchen

Beyond number, size and height, the material of the pendant fixture is what connects the lighting to the overall design language of the kitchen.

In kitchens with natural stone countertops and warm wood tones, smoked amber glass with aged gold structure integrates naturally with the warmth of the materials without competing with them. The tinted glass diffuses the light softly while the brass finish references the hardware and tap elements throughout the rest of the kitchen.

At HBellorin, we never choose a pendant finish in isolation. We always look at the hardware on the cabinetry, the tap finish and any other metal elements in the space before confirming a fixture. Consistency across those details is what makes a kitchen feel considered rather than assembled from separate decisions.

Frequently asked questions

How many pendant lights do I need over a kitchen island?

Two pendants work well for islands up to 150 centimeters. For longer surfaces, three pendants distribute light more evenly and create a stronger visual composition. For islands between 150 and 220 centimeters, an integrated linear system like the IPON L carries four pendants on a single bar and resolves the question of number and spacing in one decision.

How high should pendant lights hang above a kitchen island?

The bottom of the fixture should sit between 75 and 90 centimeters above the island surface. This provides effective task lighting while keeping the sightline across the kitchen open. For larger format systems, precision at this height is even more important given the visual weight of the fixture.

What size pendant is right for a kitchen island?

The diameter of each pendant should be roughly one quarter to one third of the island's width. Oversized pendants in relation to the counter tend to feel heavy and interrupt movement around the space. Large format circular systems work best in kitchens with generous ceiling height and a longer island.

Should all pendants above an island be the same model?

In most cases, yes. A consistent model creates visual rhythm and balance. The IPON S and IPON L share the same design language, which makes them a coherent combination when one is used individually and the other as a complete linear system above a longer island.

What finish works best for kitchen island pendants?

The finish should reference other metal elements in the kitchen such as cabinet hardware, tap and handles. Smoked amber glass with aged gold structure works well with warm natural materials including wood and stone. Matte black suits more industrial or contemporary kitchens where the contrast is intentional.

Can I use a single large pendant instead of multiple smaller ones?

Yes, for square or compact islands a single statement pendant can work well. For rectangular islands longer than 120 centimeters, a single fixture rarely provides even illumination across the full surface. A linear system like the IPON L resolves this by distributing multiple sources across the length of the island in a single integrated piece.

Does ceiling height affect which pendant I should choose?

Significantly. Higher ceilings support fixtures with more visual weight. Large format systems read correctly in spaces with generous ceiling height. In rooms with ceilings below 2.6 meters, compact individual pendants like the IPON S are preferable to avoid reducing the sense of space.
